AnnotationKeynote speakers, headed by Paul Boateng as Minister of State at the Home Office, made presentations on a range of ways in which individuals and organisations could help in developing a national strategy for carers. Other speakers represented social services and local government in general, community pharmacists, retailing outlets, and voluntary services. Fifteen discussion groups, all including carers, looked at how some of the problem issues faced by carers may be solved, or services improved. A morning session examined questions of a theoretical or thought-provoking nature, e.g. on values and principles, and how services might be evaluated. In contrast, the afternoon discussions were generally practical and support-orientated, covering, for example: information needs; emergency support; use of technology; admissions to residential care; caring at a distance; identifying cares in local communities; recognition of needs by general practitioners (GPs); children as carers; ethnic groups; enabling carers to remain in employment; and short breaks from caring responsibilities. Although not mentioned on the item, the Department of Health (DoH) is the publisher.(RH).
