Annotation | The 1995 report, "The right person, the right time, the right place", found care needs below the level expected for nursing home residents and a lack of documentation concerning placements. The present report concerns a larger audit to discover whether the problems observed in south-east London were also apparent nationwide. In 1995/96, audit teams collected data on 897 older people in 150 nursing homes in six areas: Birmingham, Exeter, Ipswich, Newcastle, Swansea, and London (Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth). A second audit in 1997/98 involved a sample of 282 older people in 40 nursing homes. Results from the second audit indicate that adequacy of documentation had improved: medical documentation had improved from 37% to 67%, social worker documentation from 21% to 61%, and nursing documentation from 39% to 67%. Apparent appropriateness of placement had minimally improved from 84% to 86%. This study suggests there is a national problem concerning the adequacy of rehabilitation before nursing home admission, and the adequacy of documentation relating to residents on admission. Regular, local audit is needed to ensure that older people are not admitted to nursing homes without good reason. (RH). |
