Annotation | Social services departments (SSDs) and health authorities are now working more closely together to assess and plan services for people with mental illness, and to involve service users and their carers more fully. Most authorities have developed joint strategies for their mental health services. However, few have achieved the level of integration required by the 1995 Department of Health (DoH) guidance "Building bridges" (Local authority social services letter LASSL (95)12). This report is based on an inspection of SSD arrangements for the care programme approach/ care management for adults with mental health problems in 15 authorities. It was undertaken by multidisciplinary teams and focused on the experience of service users and their carers. It gives an overview of how SSDs are working with partner agencies to meet the needs of mental health service users; includes a checklist and examples of good practice; and suggests what further developments are required concerning: safety; support and care networks; treatment and therapies; accommodation; finance and leisure; participation; race and gender; and strategy and management issues. Appendices include standards and criteria, and the methodology for the inspection. (RH). |
