AnnotationIndividuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementia frequently express the wish to die during the course of their illness. However, the existing literature suggests that about 10% of adults with dementia exhibit possible suicide risk, but attempted or successful suicides are rare. This article briefly describes the circumstances of eight suicides of older married men who were reported to have indications of dementia. Descriptive epidemiological research is needed to identify the incidence, risk factors, and clinical characteristics of people with dementia who successfully kill themselves, as well as of those who exhibit ideation or attempt suicide.
