Annotation | Coronary heart disease (CHD) and decline in cognitive functioning and dementia are common problems in older people. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are connected with vascular dementia, but less is known about cognitive functioning among older patients with CHD based on population studies. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of CHD on cognitive functioning among older people living in the community, and to analyse the relationship between cognitive impairment and the severity of CHD. The study was a part of a research project on the epidemiology of respiratory diseases and CVDs among older Finnish people (the Lieto Study). Results showed that among men cognitive impairment was associated with high age, the use of cardiac glycosides and physical disability. Among women, cognitive impairment was associated with high age and the use of antipsychotics. The study concluded that, in general, CHD had no independent association with cognitive impairment in this group of community-dwelling older people. Among men, however, a complicated CHD may negatively affect cognitive functioning. (AKM). |
