Annotation | Most of the professional nursing care provided to patients living at home, the majority of whom are older people, is delivered by district nursing staff, however, services are under pressure and there is often a mismatch between resources, skills and demand. This report, based on visits to seven National Health Service (NHS) trusts in England and Wales, highlights the need for clear service objectives, referral criteria and systematic caseload review to improve the management of demand and the targeting of resources. It also explores some key aspects of quality, using two major areas of care provision where there is national clinical guidance - leg ulcers and continence. Recommendations focus on ways in which trusts need to review the ways in which they organise, manage and deliver district nursing services. (AKM). |
