Annotation | Latino elders are increasing numerically, and are projected to continue to do so well into the 21st century. This population group, in addition, is increasing in diversity and is no longer limited to Mexican American, Puerto Rican or Cuban origins. Indeed, this group is likely to have some impact on most geographical areas of the US. The first three articles provide a conceptual framework and demographic picture of Latino elders. The remaining eight articles consider a variety of Latino elder needs across ethno-specific groups: the Yaquis of Old Pascua in Tucson, Arizona; Dominican immigrant elders and their social service needs; middle-aged Puerto Rican women as primary caregivers; findings from the San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging concerning older Mexican Americans; substance abuse; social policy and politics of Hispanic ageing; ethnic differences in caregiver burden; and a comparison of patterns of long-term care of Puerto Rican, African-American and Non-Latino white elders. This issue of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work is also published by the Howarth Press as a monograph, "Latino elders and the twenty-first century: issues and challenges for culturally competent research and practice. " (RH). |
