AnnotationThe ethical dilemma surrounding the use of psychotropic drugs for behaviour control in middle- to late-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD) is examined. The authors argue in support of psychotropic drugs, but they also examine the arguments against concerning the principles of distributive justice, best interest standard, loss of autonomy, and concept of self. The principles are re-examined in the context of the patient in the community in long-term rather than acute care. The needs of patients and caregivers are considered, and the article concludes by supporting the use of psychotropic drugs for behaviour control in middle to late stage AD patients. The article also includes religious resources for dealing with AD patients. (RH).
