AnnotationThe Highland Carers Project, which has since ceased, worked in collaboration with a range of voluntary and statutory organisations to support carers and to create opportunities for them to influence service planning and delivery. This research project, funded by the National Lottery Charities Board, was a study of different types of rural and urban communities in Highland Region, the informal networks that exist for carers within different communities, and the implications for development and delivery of community care services. This summary discusses barriers to carer support (principally difficulties with access to or in accepting help),and "community capacity" (availability of resources). Recommendations are made on enabling carers, supportive communities, and carer-sensitive services. A key theme of the National Carers Strategy is community networks, and the report's findings will be particularly relevant. (RH).
