AnnotationA 1997 survey by Help the Aged, "The tip of the iceberg", revealed many recorded complaints concerning the care of older people in NHS (National Health Service) hospitals. In response, the Secretary of State for Health, Frank Dobson, asked HAS 2000 (the Health Advisory Service) to investigate the treatment of older people in hospital. HAS 2000's report "Not because they are old" published in 1998 found "great variability in the quality and effectiveness of care". This article reconsiders the Help the Aged survey findings, and groups the issues raised into the same categories as identified by HAS 2000. These are: general satisfaction and care issues; staff attitudes towards older people, and staff-patient interactions; delays in admission; the physical environment; equipment and supplies; staff roles and shortages; supply and quality of food and drink; feeding and nutrition; privacy and dignity; communication and pressures on staff; agreeing the boundaries of care; and discharge from hospital.
