Annotation | Arterial stiffness has been shown to be positively related to cardiovascular disease risk. However, little is known about the influence of hormone replacement use (HRT) on arterial stiffness in women. Arterial pulse wave velocity (PWV) and carotid augmentation index (AI, applanation tonometry) were measured in 34 healthy post-menopausal women, including 18 users and 16 non-users of HRT. There were no significant group differences in any of the physical characteristics including resting blood pressure. None of the measures of arterial stiffness differed between HRT users and non-users. The present cross-sectional study indicates that reduced arterial stiffness does not appear to be a likely mechanism contributing to the lower incidence of cardiovascular disease in post-menopausal women taking HRT.
