AnnotationThe hospice movement in the US was inspired by the work of Dame Cicely Saunders and the St Christopher's Hospice with she founded in 1967. This article summarises standards developed in 1981 by the National Hospice Organisation. It also gives the definitions of palliative care drawn up by a World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Committee on Cancer Pain Relief and Active Support Care in 1989. Physicians involved in primary care should be aware of principles of pain management and issues concerning palliative care, which are discussed. (RH).
