AnnotationSome of the emotional difficulties faced by older people may be understood with reference to the idea of shame. However, there have been no studies which have suggested that this painful emotion is something which is left behind as we pass through the lifespan. This article summarises ideas from the psychology literature concerning the nature of shame, and shame as a social emotion. The author considers the social and cultural context of some sources of shame for older people in the UK, with reference to negative stereotypes of ageing. Psychological services should be developed to enhance older people's image, and to work against the psychological difficulties caused by ageism. (RH).
