Annotation | After five years of working closely with people with dementia, writer John Killick found that he had to seek help in coming to terms with his experiences. In his work, he had always concentrated on the outcome for the person with dementia, and had never considered the effects on himself. Patrick Casements 1985 book, "On learning from the patient" described a condition known as "cumulative secondary traumatisation". Reading this persuaded Killick of the need to withdraw for a while from working directly with people with dementia, and instead to spend time thinking and writing. His experience is by way of caution to others to build in similar safeguards in their work. (RH). |
