AnnotationThe role and world of the care assistant has been largely neglected by research; but if we are to explore psychosocial interventions which will enable person-centred care to occur, it is vital that we step back, explore and attempt to understand the reality of their work as they see it. This paper reviews research on the concept of care, including the gendered and emotional nature of care work, and what has been written about care assistants' experiences of their work, including stress and burnout. The absence of formal qualifications or a powerful united voice perpetuates the lack of value attached to work by care assistants. (RH).
