All play and no work? Take a fresh look at activities | Author(s) | Alison Johnson |
Journal title | Journal of Dementia Care, vol 6, no 6, November/ December 1998 |
Pages | pp 25-27 |
Keywords | Dementia ; Residents [care homes] ; Care homes ; Housework ; Activities of older people ; Food preparation. |
Annotation | Living with dementia does not necessarily mean that you can no longer help make beds, lay tables, clear away crockery, or do the washing up. Residents in care homes should be getting on with the normal activities of daily living - particularly meal preparation - as such activities give a continuing sense of role or purpose which is very important to all older people. This article is an edited version of the author's speech to the Dementia Care '98 conference in Loughborough, in which she cites examples of good practice in care home settings. (RH). |
