AnnotationThe Southwestern Ontario Regional Geriatric Program (SWORGP) is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health to promote research, education, and improved clinical care of older people. This article reports on a geriatric education course consisting of four seminars, which was developed for health care professionals other than general practitioners (GPs) in a rural county. Self-reported practices with older patients were noted in assessment of medication use, physical assessment, mental status assessment, screening for elder abuse, and the use of community resources. This Canadian study suggests that a needs-based educational course can significantly improve practice with regards to assessment of older people, and is feasible even in smaller communities. (RH).
