AnnotationGerontological literature and research has clearly demonstrated that attitudes toward older people held by nursing staff play a critical role in the quality of care provided in nursing and residential care homes. The authors describe a US three and a half hour training course aimed at sensitising nursing assistants in a long-term care setting to the ageing process and experiences of older people. Nursing assistants from personal care units participated in a role playing game, and were then presented with an overview of normal ageing topics. Results of the study demonstrated a significant improvement in attitudes toward older people by nursing assistants who had attended the course. (RH).
