Annotation | Using a content analysis of one week's prime time television from the five terrestrial channels (BBC1, BB2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5) and two satellite channels (UK Gold and Sky One), this report examines the frequency with which older people (aged 60+) were represented and the manner in which they were portrayed. A total of 356 video recorded programmes (167.9 hours of output) were analysed, and information categorised on demographics, level of appearance, social interaction, social integration and issues relevant to stereotyping of older people. A comparison sample was drawn of two younger people (1 male, 1 female under the age of 60) from each programme, to examine possible differences between treatment of older and younger people. The report examines these overall patterns, but focuses specifically on factual and fictional programming using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study found some areas of concern, such as considerable under-representation of older people on television, and a negative association with growing old reinforced by a tendency to find humour in age-related stereotypes. However, positive portrayals of older people were not uncommon, especially in fiction. (RH). |
