AnnotationThe authors use their experience of a comparative European research project on pension reform, to discuss some general issues encountered in European social policy research. They outline the objectives and limitations of the specific project on pension reform, and discuss the advantages and limitations of alternative approaches to the comparative analysis of social policy, including an explanation of their use of a simulation approach. They elaborate on the relative merits of the particular type of simulation modelling used (microsimulation) to examine pension systems in a number of countries, and present results on pension income relative to: average national earnings; own earnings; and the pension received by an individual on average earnings. The benefits of the simulation modelling approach to comparative social policy analysis are assessed. (RH).
