AnnotationAdult day care is regarded as an important respite service to family caregivers of older people with dementia to help the person to remain in the community. This study includes 178 Swedish and 86 American day care centres for cognitively impaired older people. Client, staff and organisational characteristics were surveyed. Although the two countries have quite different systems of care for older people, client characteristics were similar, suggesting that adult day care centres are a convergent solution to a common problem of supporting older people with disabilities. Differences were found between the United States (US) and Sweden in the staff, structure, and services of the programmes. The study raises questions about day care centres' aims and organisations.
