AnnotationThe adverse outcomes of inappropriate use of medications are well documented, particularly amongst older people. The Medicine Information Project trains older volunteers to inform their peers about using medicines wisely and improve their communication with health professionals. Feedback was sought from health professionals who had contact with the programme's graduates to gauge whether they perceived a role for such volunteers in the health care system. Thirty-four health professionals in Sydney were interviewed individually, using a semi-structured questionnaire. Responses were content-analysed and main themes identified, which are reported using verbatim quotations for illustration. Feedback was generally very positive. Graduates were perceived as effective and appropriate peer educators, who functioned to bridge the information gap between older consumers and health professionals. Recommendations are made, and the need for safeguards noted. (AKM).
