Annotation | A qualitative study of a group of older people involved in adult education is described in this article. The aim of the study was to illuminate the meaning of education from a life course perspective. Baseline information was obtained from a questionnaire survey of 90 individuals who attended a residential summer school. Interviews were conducted with 13 of the respondents, focusing on their family, work and education careers. The findings illustrate the diversity of life experiences, which influence the significance of educational activity to individuals over the life course. The final section proposes a framework for understanding educational activity in the context of retirement. (AKM). |
