AnnotationTo explore what degree cognitive impairment impacts consistency of health care decisions, 185 long-term care residents were interviewed three times at weekly intervals about their choices regarding a health care proxy. Several measures of cognitive impairment including the Folstein Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), the Global Deterioration Scale and the diagnosis of dementia were used. Findings revealed that 39% of those with a diagnosis of dementia made decisions that were consistent with and comparable to those of their non-demented peers demonstrating that patients diagnosed with dementia may still possess significant health care decisional capacity.
