AnnotationIn July 1997, the Health Education Authority (HEA) responded to an invitation to tender for the NHS Executive's South Thames study to explore the prevention of accidents in the home among older people. This summary reports on an extension to the HEA's study, to identify initiatives also being pursued or planned by health professionals working in social services, housing, and environmental health departments of local authorities and health promotion units. It outlines national "mapping" of activity; qualitative research and case studies; dissemination and feedback; training; and inter-agency working. The study identified barriers to developing programmes of work with older people, indicating that accident prevention needs to have a multi-agency, interdisciplinary approach requiring joint planning and joint investment of resources.
