Annotation | Comprehensive assessment is the cornerstone of good practice in the health and social care of older people. However, methods of assessment vary, and this lack of standardisation affects the quality of care. This article discusses the MDS/RAI (Minimum Data Set/ Resident Assessment Instrument), a comprehensive standardised assessment, which was developed in the US in response to the poor quality of care found in many nursing homes. In the UK, MDS/RAI is likely to be implemented by health authorities, social service departments (SSDs), and some private sector nursing homes, while primary care groups will find the instrument of great benefit when commissioning care for their older patients.
