AnnotationThis article describes the development of a Community Leadership Programme in Israel that has succeeded in training retired executives and placing them in leadership roles in the area of social welfare. The course was launched in 1990 as a joint effort of Yakir, a service-oriented non-profit association, and the Bar-Ilan Program in Applied Gerontology, a lifelong learning programme based at Bar-Ilan University. Of those who have completed the course, most have chosen to work as volunteers, and have taken positions making use of their organisational and administrative skills; others are involved in service delivery. However, the authors believe that it is too soon to formulate final conclusions on their work. (RH).
