Health, health care and ageing in Africa
 — challenges and opportunities
Author(s)Karen E Charlton
Journal titleSouthern African Journal of Gerontology, vol 7, no 2, October 1998
Pagespp 1-3
KeywordsHealth [elderly] ; Health services ; Literature reviews ; Africa.
AnnotationThe term "geratology" (coined by Sebastian Fairweather in Oxford) is introduced; it denotes the study of discourse on ageing, to include both social gerontology and geriatrics, and to reflect the need for a multidisciplinary approach to ageing. As there has been an imbalance in health science versus social science coverage in the Southern African Journal of Gerontology, this editorial introduces an issue with a series of articles on health and ageing in Africa. Three deal with the maintenance of good health, while others look at forms of health care delivery. (RH).
