Health, health care and ageing in Africa challenges and opportunities | Author(s) | Karen E Charlton |
Journal title | Southern African Journal of Gerontology, vol 7, no 2, October 1998 |
Pages | pp 1-3 |
Keywords | Health [elderly] ; Health services ; Literature reviews ; Africa. |
Annotation | The term "geratology" (coined by Sebastian Fairweather in Oxford) is introduced; it denotes the study of discourse on ageing, to include both social gerontology and geriatrics, and to reflect the need for a multidisciplinary approach to ageing. As there has been an imbalance in health science versus social science coverage in the Southern African Journal of Gerontology, this editorial introduces an issue with a series of articles on health and ageing in Africa. Three deal with the maintenance of good health, while others look at forms of health care delivery. (RH). |
