AnnotationA survey of all meals on wheels recipients in Edinburgh was carried out in March 1997 as part of a departmental review of the service. The particular concerns which led to the review were questions identified by the Catering and Domestic Services Officer about the quality of meals, recipients' levels of satisfaction, and concern that clients might be delaying eating meals thus decreasing nutritional value as well as storing and reheating meals unsafely. The survey revealed a high level of satisfaction with meals on wheels, with responses indicating greater appreciation of their nutritional value than of the social contact provided by someone calling. Gender differences found are in line with those elsewhere: for those who were not housebound, men received on average more meals per week than women. For those living alone, men received more meals per week than women. (RH).
