AnnotationDuring 1996, Salford Mental Health Services' Older Adults Clinical Psychology Department went through some major changes in its role as a provider of services to older people. A needs analysis had been undertaken, which identified specific areas of need within the community. The study seemed to show that within the target group of older adults, there were levels of psychological distress that were not being addressed by either medical means or other professional groups. This inspired the department's clinical managers to develop the idea of a primary care based counselling service, whose role it would be to fill this identified gap in local services. The author outlines how the service was set up, what training was required, evaluation of the service, and innovations. Although it took some time to become known and used, the counselling service now has a steady rate of referrals. (RH).
