AnnotationThe Conference on Ageing and the Labour Market was organised to examine the challenges posed by an ageing workforce in the European Union and to consider policy measures at EU and national levels which could improve the labour market situation of older workers. Results from two EU-wide research projects were presented: combatting age barriers in job recruitment and training; and public policy options to combat age discrimination against older workers. The conference focused debate on the way that policies at all levels can improve the labour market situation of ageing workers and the older unemployed. Three workshops assessed prospects for different initiatives: managing career development and improving employability; workplace practice and policy; and public policy and legislation. The conference underlined the complexity of the issues, and led to a general recognition that older workers have need of particular support within the overall needs of all the workforce. It was acknowledged that a balanced-age workforce is most beneficial to all concerned. (RH).
