AnnotationDespite increased awareness, there is a gap between policy and practice in carer support. This paper aims to describe the current picture of carer support, and to suggest what needs to be considered as national and local policies are developed and implemented. It draws on the work of the Carers Impact development programme based at the King's Fund and other recent research. Three key recommendations are made. First, there needs to be clearer and more consistent directions on national policy priorities, which should be based on principles of social inclusion, choice and prevention. Second, at a local level, there is a need for a more strategic approach to carer support, with more incentives given to partnerships between the NHS (National Health Service), local government, voluntary organisations and other local bodies working with carers. Specifically, a framework for integrating support across services, such as the Carers Compass, could help agencies to take a more strategic approach and develop ways of assessing their performance against priorities.
