AnnotationThe Anxiety Disorder Scale (ADS) is a semi-structured instrument for detecting anxiety in community-based samples. The aim of this study was to develop a shorter version of the Anxiety Disorder Scale (ADS) for use as a rapid screening instrument in primary care. The prevalence rate of generalised anxiety was 16% using the established cutpoint of the ADS and showed an age-related decline. A reduced four-item version of the ADS generalised anxiety subscale, the FEAR (frequency of anxiety, enduring nature of anxiety, alcohol or sedative use, restlessness or fidgeting) was found to have potential as a rapid screening instrument in primary care settings.
