Annotation | Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major health problem in developed countries, and with the increase in the older population new alternatives are being sought to meet the challenges of dementia care. This paper focuses on preventive strategies, in particular genetic testing followed by preventive treatment for groups at risk. Specific topics covered include: epidemiology and costs of dementia; genetic factors and aetiopathogenic events; therapeutic strategies; glutamatergic neurotransmission; glutamate-medicated excitotoxicity in neurogeneration and AD; glutamate receptors as targets for AD treatment; and genetic assessment and prevention planning.
