AnnotationFew studies have been conducted on older adult adult literacy in recent years, and difficulties remain in defining how literacy functions in the lives of older people. This study of social function of literacy in a nursing home relates to a writing group in a Michigan small-town nursing home, with an occupational therapist as facilitator. The article considers the communal experience, transformation of relationships through writing, and writing as a means of interpreting the social world. There is potential for application of critical theories of literacy to research with older, institutionalised adults. (RH).
