AnnotationThe author and colleagues at Oxford Brookes University examine their pilot study measuring the effect of therapeutic massage on the sleep patterns of older people in care settings. Issues are raised about sleep measurement conducted for the research, and the study's feasibility and rigour. Two new measurement tools are introduced: a sleep pattern assessment tool (SPAT), and a subjective evaluation of sleep tool (SEST). Difficulties were found in the collection of objective data; and the value of subjective data, particularly in determining the quality of sleep, is discussed. Although sleep assessment may not be considered as a priority for nursing care, it is important to consider that quality of sleep is likely to affect patients' recovery and rehabilitation. This article is an edited version of a paper in NT Research, vol 4, no 1, January 1999. The full report is published as "Sleep of older people in nursing care settings and the impact of back massage on sleep: a pilot study", by Steven Ersser et al (Oxford Centre for Health Care Research and Development, £10).
