AnnotationThere are no data on prevalence (all cases) or incidence (new cases) of treated epilepsy, and no data on fertility of women with epilepsy from an unselected UK population. The authors used the General Practice Research Database to ascertain incidence and prevalence of those with treated epilepsy in 1995. The period prevalence of treated epilepsy was 5.15 per 1000 people. This was higher in older people, ranging from 6.01 at 65-69 years to 7.73 at 85 years and older. The incidence of treated epilepsy was 80 per 100,000 people. Again this was higher in older age groups, ranging from 85.9 for 65-69 years, to 135.4 for 85 years and older. Compared with previous studies, the authors found that the incidence of epilepsy was higher in older people and lower in children, and the prevalence rates also increase with age. The information regarding epilepsy for older age groups is likely to be the main interest for this readership; accordingly, no reference is made here to the study's results concerning women's fertility rates.
