AnnotationOver recent decades, evidence has accumulated documenting Vitamin D deficiency in older populations in Europe and elsewhere, in particular in those who are housebound and institutionalised. The current recommended daily intake for vitamin D in the UK is 400 IU daily for people aged 65 and over. This article reviews the available evidence on vitamin D supplementation and suggests that 800 IU daily should be advised, which would have a positive effect on the increasing morbidity and costs attributable to fractures caused by osteoporosis in older people.
