AnnotationThe Corcoran Symposium, held in conjunction with the opening of an exhibition, "Hospice: a Photographic Inquiry", brought together American advocates for better end of life care. The aim was for participants to begin to develop a shared language and agenda identifying barriers to progress, and to enable collaboration. The symposium was divided into five sessions. First, "Ars morendi: illuminations on 'The Good Death' from the arts and humanities", examined death and dying through art and the ages. Three participatory sessions followed: Hospice: current practice, future possibilities; Managed capitated care: opportunities for good and evil; and Pain, symptoms and suffering: possibilities and barriers. A final session on visions and strategies suggested the following: focus on the patient; educating professionals and the public; teamwork; continuous improvement of quality; and encouraging research into dying and better care for the dying. Also included are papers commissioned for the symposium, with additional chapters illustrating efforts to improve end of life care. (RH).
