Annotation | Person-centred dementia care (PCDC) offers a radical enhancement of the quality of life of dementia sufferers, especially those in long-term care. PCDC focuses on the individuality of sufferers in terms of pre-morbid personality, biography and everyday psychological needs, rather than their neurological deficit. Doctors have a role in promoting good quality psychosocial care. They should be cautious in prescribing major tranquillisers to nursing home patients. Such requests should be used not only to assess mental state, but also to bring attention to deficits in care. (RH). |
