AnnotationAdvance organisers are instructional devices that can be applied to prose passages to provide the reader with a conceptual framework in organising the information that follows. Two studies were conducted that examined whether advance organisers would have differential benefits for older individuals when compared with young adults. Experiment one investigated age and treatment effects in recall of a passage at two delay intervals. Experiment two partially replicated the first experiment, but it also evaluated the effectiveness of advance organisation with a sample of adults of limited verbal ability in remembering the information provided in text from the gist of a passage through three levels of detail. Results indicated that advance organisers may help adults of all ages, but only under restricted circumstances. In the first experiment, older adults were helped on a test of recognition memory, but not on one of recall memory. In the second experiment, both young and older adults of limited verbal ability appeared to be helped in comprehending detail in the text. (AKM).
