Annotation | Surveys indicate growing use of complementary therapies (CT) by older Americans, often without medical consultation. Using questionnaires, this study examined 63 primary care physicians' attitudes and behaviours regarding CT for older patients. The majority of respondents believed that their older patients were interested in using CT, especially for coping with chronic illness (86%). Less than 25% of physicians were comfortable discussing CT in general with patients or made referrals. However, most would consider suggesting CT for control of symptoms. Seventy-five percent saw the need for education and/or research about CT for older patients. Physicians' own use of CT, age, female gender, and medical degree were associated with attitudes. (AKM). |
