AnnotationThis preliminary report summarises statistical findings from a research study conducted by the Personal Social Services Research Unit, London School of Economics, and supported by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and the PSSRU itself. The study was undertaken within the framework of the Johns Hopkins Comparative Sector Project (phase 2), co-ordinated from Baltimore, US, and led by Lester Salamon and Helmut Anheier. It is the first of a series of UK publications arising from phase 2 of the international study, "The emerging sector revisited: a summary" (Center for Civil Society Studies, Johns Hopkins University). The authors describe the overall size and composition of the sector in the mid 1990s, and they demonstrate how its composition and resource base have changed over time. The UK experience is set in comparative context, by showing how the sector compares with the equivalent set of institutions in other parts of the world. (RH).
