AnnotationThe Survey on Aging and Independence conducted by Statistics Canada in 1991 provides answers to a broad range of questions relating to retirement. This paper reviews the literature on patterns of retirement in Canada, and formulates hypotheses postulating that immigrants have a higher propensity to build up savings during their working years. Secondary analysis of data indicates that the trend towards early retirement characteristics of the past twenty years is more common among native-born than foreign-born workers in Canada. Yet activity past age 65 is more common among immigrants; and early retirees born in Third World countries are more likely to return to the workforce following retirement. The propensity for immigrants to build up savings during their working years is neither validated nor invalidated by the data. (RH).
