Annotation | While India is becoming an ageing society, changes in society are undermining the family's capacity to provide support. The demographic structure is used to explain why India must develop a comprehensive welfare policy for older people. This article looks at existing constitutional and legislative provision; the types of social security, welfare benefits and pension schemes available; old age homes; health policies and geriatric services; and housing policy. The author advocates a National Policy to be in place for the International Year of Older Persons in 2000. (RH). |
