AnnotationThis report presents the findings of research on the decisions trustees make about pension scheme provision. The research was carried out before the pension reforms, set out in the Pensions Act 1995, came into effect in April 1997. The study involved in-depth interviews with 48 trustees from a range of pension schemes. The research had three aims. First, it examined how the trustees responsible for pension scheme investment reach their decisions, the reasons for making particular decisions concerning investments, and what is taken into account and why. Second, it explored trustees' relationships with other parties involved - the sponsoring employer, pension fund managers, advisers and consultants (internal or external) - who trustees consult, when and why. Thirdly, it investigated whether trustees' investment decisions had changed, or whether or not they think they will change in future, and in what ways. Also covered in the report are: asset allocation; control of risks; and informing members about investment decisions and strategy. (RH).
