AnnotationResponses to 14 items of a questionnaire on motor fitness were collected from 990 Japanese over 65s living in the community, in this study supported by the Longitudinal Interdisciplinary Study on Aging conducted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology (TMIG-LISA). The Motor Fitness Scale was created by totalling the score for each item on the questionnaire. The Scale, comprising three sub-scales - Mobility, Strength, and Balance - appeared highly reliable. The Scale can discriminate among older people who are at the high end of the functional spectrum that determines their level of competence in daily life. Results suggest that the Motor Fitness Scale is a feasible substitute for the application of physical performance measures in assessing the physical function of older people in the community. (RH).
