AnnotationThis paper was originally presented at the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) International conference on biological aspects of aging research in Venice in December 1997. In this survey of literary utopias, the author attempts to underline the fact that for utopians, old age has always constituted a puzzle, and that the problem of ageing is closely associated with illness and death. Three issues are examined in this analysis of literary works with utopian themes. First, that Utopia as the land of harmony and perfection, has difficulty in dealing with the theme of old age, illness and death. Second, is that "nowhere" (the Greek version of ou-topos) presupposes an unawareness of the wearing of time. Third, the western utopia reflects an ambivalent attitude of society to older people down the centuries. (RH).
