AnnotationAn international conference was convened by the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) in 1996, Lansdowne, Virginia, to review the current knowledge of behavioural disturbances of dementia and to reach consensus in five areas: nosology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and research directions. This special issue contains the papers in summary format, as well as the ensuing discussions, presented at the conference. This eighth paper outlines several areas that require attention in future research on behavioural symptoms in people with dementia. Prevention of dementia in persons at risk, reduction of the costs associated with dementia, and development of better treatment strategies are the main priorities for researchers. (AKM).
