AnnotationThe effectiveness of rehabilitative and medically oriented day hospital care on community-based long-term care patients were studied in a randomised, controlled trial. A total of 177 patients receiving home care in a rural area were randomised into two groups: one in which they were offered a 2-month period of rehabilitation and medical care in a recently opened day hospital, and one in which they were offered treatment, as before, in home care. Both groups were examined at baseline and 2, 5, and 12 months. Findings revealed that the groups used hospitals (excluding the day hospital treatment) equally during the follow-up year. The treatment group had significantly more specialist consultation than did the control group. In the treatment group, the number of symptoms was reduced significantly and the patients' views of their on health improved, however, physical functioning was not significantly improved. (AKM).
